Overview: Anger

Anger is the basic emotion that all human share and there’s nothing naturally wrong in experiencing it. It is the emotion of not having our needs met. We are programmed with the ability to express our anger from birth and then it gets complicated. Anger can be caused by both external and internal events. You could be angry at a specific person or event, or your anger could be caused by worrying or threatening about your personal problems. Memories of traumatic can also trigger angry feelings.
Our anger can be our companion. It helps us survive, giving us the strength to fight back or run away when attacked or faced with injustice. In itself, it’s neither good nor bad, but it can be frightening. This feeling can lead to destructive and violent behaviour, and so we tend to be frightened of anger.
Unexpressed anger can create other problems. It can lead to pathological expressions of anger, such as passive-aggressive behavior or a personality that seems everlastingly pessimistic and hostile. People who are constantly putting others down, criticizing everything, and making distrustful comments haven’t learned how to constructively express their anger. Maybe they aren’t likely to have many successful relationships. Screaming at someone surely vents anger as well as increases the other person’s anger and defensiveness.
