Depression

Depression is a mental health illness that is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness that don’t go away on their own.
Most of us feel this way at one time or another for short periods. It’s natural to feel down sometimes, but if that low mood lingers day after day, it could signal depression. It is not a sign of weakness or a negative personality but it is a major public health problem and a treatable medical condition.
The primary symptoms of depression are a sad mood or loss of interest in life. Activities that were once pleasurable lose their appeal. Patients may also be haunted by a sense of guilt or worthlessness, lack of hope, and recurring thoughts of death or suicide. Sad and distressful events occur in everyone’s life, and responding to them emotionally is healthy. However, feeling miserable consistently and without any sense of hope is not normal, and should be treated as a serious medical condition.
