Xbox LIVE has always been dominated by first person shooters. For more than two years, titles from the Call of Duty series have been in the most-played game list in Microsoft’s Gaming Network with Modern Warfare 3 on the top spot.
This past week, that reign came to an end when Minecraft’s Xbox 360 edition was hailed as the most played game for the Xbox 360. Minecraft took the No. 1 spot in the week of October 15.
Minecraft is a game conceived by indie studio Mojang. The game was originally released on PC and is designed to be all mechanics which involves digging, building and crafting. It was later adapted to Xbox 360 console on May 2012. Unlike most games, Minecraft focuses on a player’s creativity, allowing creation of structures and places using textured blocks on a 3D world. The game is currently the best-selling Xbox Live Arcade title with a remarkable 4 million copies sold.
A chart from Microsoft’s Major Nelson shows the list of most played games and it is undoubtedly surprising that Minecraft took the throne.
With the upcoming Halo 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops II coming later next month, we’ll have to see if the new king of Xbox LIVE can handle the pressure and hold on to the throne or just break apart like a building block.
